For clients who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, the goal of our care plan at Active Day medical adult day centers is to assist the client in controlling symptoms and delaying further deterioration.
Our on-site physical, occupational and speech therapists play an important role in this care plan. Physical therapy helps strengthen and tone underused muscles, give rigid muscles better range of motion, improve balance and overcome gait problems. Even simple physical activities such as walking can foster an enhanced sense of well-being by increasing endurance, decreasing anxiety and boosting energy levels and mood.
Occupational therapists help clients maintain their independence and self-respect by providing exercises and assistive devices that enable them to continue performing daily tasks such as dressing, cooking and eating on their own. In addition, speech therapy can be valuable in improve speaking and swallowing abilities.
Active Day staff also work with physicians to modify the treatment program as needed. Staff are trained to recognize the signs and symptoms that indicate progression of the disease, reporting these changes to the physician and adjusting the client’s therapeutic activities accordingly.
In addition, because medications are critical to controlling symptoms, staff may assist with the administration of medications or monitor self-administration in order to ensure compliance with the prescribed regime. They also evaluate the success of changes in medication type, dosage, and amount of time between doses, documenting and relaying their findings to the client’s physician.
